SmartRipper - Advanced features

The Movie mode does IFO parsing. If you should not like that you can chose the Files mode which will let you rip only the VOB files you selected without touching them or the Backup mode which will simply copy the whole DVD to your harddisk.

Let's discuss the options: As you can see in IFO -> Title -> Angle we have two title sets: vts_01 and vts_02. This means that all vob files on the DVD are either called vts_01_x.vob or vts_02_x.vob. vts_01 is 4303MB, so larger than 4x 1023MB (1023 MB is the "standard" size of a VOB file) so there's 1 VOBs in the first title set, vts_01_1.vob up to vts_01_5.vob. Of course there's also vts_01_0.vob which contains the menu of title 1. SmartRipper will select the main movie of the disk and only that. Eventual studio logo, FBI warnings, advertising and such will be ignored. The Title 2 in vts_01 is most likely an FBI warning since that disk has such a thing. Total Selection will show you some statistics about the DVD and the current selection (what is currently selected and will be ripped if you press Start). As you can see this mode allows you to rip single chapters.. among other nice things of course. The Datarates are indicated in KiloBYTES / second, that's why they appear to be so small. If you select an Angle in a title all Chapters will be selected by default and you can uncheck the chapters you don't want and they won't be ripped. Below the Chapters selection we have the statistics of the currently selected chapter and the Video info will show you some general info about the MPEG-2 stream. Interestingly a chapter is not always equal a cell. I currently don't know why some titles have more than one cell in a chapter. Last but not least we have the Audio information which at the current state is not accurate, the disk shown here has two 5.1channel audio tracks, not 4 channels but the languages are correct.

You may also want to modify some settings:

Usually you can go even so far as to select Key - Check once. The default is every vob-file and considering that there are quite some disks with mastering errors (that have different title keys in the same title) it may not even be such a stupid idea to leave it at the default. In a hardcore case (for instance Teaching Mrs Tingle, R2, Germany, rental edition) every cell should do the job.

The file splitting section allows you to select how many VOBs will be merged. If you have Windows NT / 2000 you can set max-filesize to whatever you like. If you have - despite my warnings - the pocket calculator OS called 9x/ME then you have a filesize limit of 2000MB and you may want to set File Splitting to every vob-file.

When you're all happy with your settings press Start.

Do I have to say something about that? Oh yes... you can see that the author is German: Prozess is the German equivalent of process. Once again SmartRipper offers some options others don't like display the current key and the position in the source vob but nothing too fancy.

Files mode

This mode is most suited for most ripping scenarios. It's also required by FlaskMpeg's DVD mode.

Since SmartRipper is rather smart it will select all the vob files you'll need. Also check the corresponding ifo file. As you can see in the picture the movie is contained in vts_01_x.vob, therefore you'll need vts_01_0.ifo. Or if you want the even more obvious way: select the largest ifo file, then press Start.
